How to create an educational TikTok channel
How to create educational TikTok videos
Creating educational TikTok videos can be a fun and engaging way to share knowledge and information with a wide audience. Whether you’re a teacher looking to share advice and tips or a hobbyist with particular subject knowledge, creating a TikTok channel with an educational focus can be a fun way to build a community of fellow educators and students.
Here are 5 tips you can follow to start your own educational TikTok channel.
- Choose a topic: Start by deciding on a topic that you’re knowledgeable about and that you think would be interesting to your audience. Better yet, choose a topic that you are passionate about and that you can talk in-depth about for a long time. You’ll need to consider their age group, interests, and how they may learn best.
- Research and gather information: Once you have chosen your topic, gather as much information as you can about it. Look to see if there are other channels on TikTok with similar topics, watch other educational videos, and read books or articles on your topic. You want to research as much as you can so you can find and develop a niche topic that no one else is doing. You want to stand out.
- Plan your content: Much of the content on TikTok is organic and unscripted. Because you’ll be creating educational content you’ll want to develop a plan to help you stay focused on what you’d like to teach. Think about how you will start your videos, or how you will introduce your chosen topic to your audience. Will you require visual aids for your videos? A lot of educational videos on TikTok use visual aids through the platform’s Greenscreen feature. Create a plan around what you will talk about first, and think about a beginning, middle, and end for your videos.
- Write a script: Early on it might not be natural to speak directly into a phone or camera. While you get used to recording videos of yourself, you may want to write a script, even if it’s just a loose idea of what you want to talk about in a video. This can help you stay focused and be mindful of what you want to achieve from your video.
- Record and Edit your video: Once you have created your plan and written a script it is time to record your video. This should be a fun experience, you have chosen a topic you’re passionate and knowledgeable about and you’re ready to share it with your audience. When recording your video it’s important to try to be natural and have fun. Record your video as many times as you feel comfortable and remember why you wanted to start your educational channel to begin with; to help build a community and teach others. Keep those things in mind and you should be well on your way to building followers and engaging with your audience.
Choosing the right topic for you and your audience
How to choose the right topic for your TikTok channel this may be an easy decision for some, or for others might require more thought. This is a good time to reflect on your skills and passions what are you most knowledgeable about? Perhaps you have been teaching the same subject for the past 20 years and know exactly what you will be teaching through your TikTok channel, or maybe you have just started a new hobby or learned a new skill and would like to take others along on your educational journey. Think of who your audience is and why they would want to watch your content. You don’t have to worry about going viral or creating a huge follow count. Sometimes the best communities are tight-knit small groups who are passionate about learning.
The great thing about TikTok is it’s entirely up to you how you create your content Unlike traditional teaching you don’t have to follow a lesson plan or curriculum. You can be as creative as you like. Learning on TikTok is supposed to be fun and engaging, so feel free to be as creative as you like.
How long should a TikTok video be?
TikTok currently offers 3 different length video formats, 15 seconds, 60 seconds, and 3 minutes. While you may be wondering how can you teach someone something in a strict 15-second, 60-second, or 3-minute format, learning to split up your content into short videos or a series of videos can be part of the fun on TikTok. You can experiment with video times and see which format your audience engages with best, Maybe they prefer shorter videos with quick tips or longer tutorial-style videos. To see the analytics for your videos, look in ‘creator tools’ on your profile: only you can see this data. While some articles on the web suggest shorter videos on the platform perform best, don’t let that limit your content as you may find different video lengths work better with different audiences.
How to create your own series
Creating a series that is interesting to your audience can require some experimenting, as not everyone will engage immediately with your content. While creating our own educational TikTok channel @deanvaughnclub we experimented with different TikTok series. We created a ‘Daily Dose’ format where we taught a new medical term through our flashcards. While we found success through our Daily Dose series we also experimented with other formats such as “Medical terms everyone should know”. While this format was somewhat successful we found other channels doing similar content. So we recommend choosing a format no one else is using to increase the originality of your content and help build a core audience. The important thing to remember is to create fun and engaging content that you think your audience will enjoy. Experiment with different content styles and monitor what works well and don’t be afraid to switch your content up.
How to build followers
There are several ways to increase your TikTok followers. First of all your content should be engaging and entertaining If you post videos that are interesting and informative you will keep your followers coming back for more. Use relevant hashtags. Depending on your content, you can find specific hashtags that your audience can search for to find your content. Interact with your followers, reply to comments, like other accounts’ videos, and follow similar accounts to your own. This can help TikTok’s algorithm know what kind of channel you are and recommend you to people who view similar content to yours. Consistently post new content, as TikTok favors accounts that post frequently, Regularly posting new content will help keep your followers engaged and encourage them to come back to your page.
