How to teach Gen Z using TikTok

Who is Gen Z?

Gen Z or sometimes referred to as Zoomers is the generation born between 1997 and 2012, they’re the generation to follow Millennials. Gen Z is aged between 10 and 26 years old and currently comprises 27% of the total current US population. Most of this generation was raised by Generation X who were born between 1965 and 1980. Gen Z is known as the first generation to have never known a world without the internet. Because of this, they’re known as the first digital generation, having had access to around-the-clock access to information via Google, streaming services like Netflix, and social media such as Tiktok. Because of this influence, it’s fundamentally different from its predecessors, with studies suggesting they’re more involved with activism, social issues, and politics via online channels

Why do teaching styles change depending on the generation?

Teaching styles often change depending on the generation of students, as each generation has its own unique characteristics and experiences that shape its learning preferences and needs.

Gen Z, for example, is the first generation to have grown up with technology as a ubiquitous part of their lives. This means they may be more comfortable with digital platforms and more accustomed to consuming information online, often in short, bite-sized pieces rather than in-class lectures or teacher-led lessons. As a result, educators need to adapt their teaching styles to incorporate more technology and use shorter, more interactive forms of content, such as short videos, podcasts, and online games.

Additionally, each generation is shaped by the events and cultural experiences that they grow up with. For example, Gen Z has grown up during a time of social and political upheaval, and this may influence their attitudes and values. As a result, educators may need to be more aware of these issues and incorporate them into their teaching practices to better connect and engage with this generation.

How can educators keep up with evolving teaching methods?

There are several ways educators can keep up with evolving teaching practices and styles.  Educators should continue to attend professional development workshops and conferences (offline or online) as these can help provide valuable insight into new teaching techniques. Utilizing educational resources and communities such as online communities and forums can provide valuable insight from other teachers and educators, and provide tips on evolving teaching trends. Additionally, teachers may find it beneficial to collaborate with other educators  through social media or online courses.

How has technology impacted how Gen Z learns

Technology has had a significant impact on how Gen Z learns in a number of ways. One major way is through the use of online resources. Gen Z has grown up with the Internet and has had access to a vast array of online learning materials such as videos, tutorials, and interactive games. This has given them the opportunity to learn about a wider range of topics than may not have been possible for previous generations.

Another way that technology has impacted how Gen Z learns is through the use of social media and other online platforms. These platforms allow students to connect with each other and share information and resources, which can be a valuable supplement to traditional classroom learning.

Additionally, technology has made it easier for teachers to incorporate interactive elements into their lessons and to give students access to real-time feedback and support. This can improve student engagement and make learning more dynamic and interactive.

Overall, technology has had a significant impact on how Gen Z learns, and it is likely to continue to shape the way education is delivered in the future.
